“Oh my GOD! LOOK at this picture of you with no pants on! Just WHERE is your self respect??!!” Tabitha’s face was red with laughter.
I laughed at Tabitha. She showed me the most ridiculous photo of me as a toddler, wearing nothing but a shirt that read ‘Spit Happens.’ Tabitha was on her second glass of wine. We had the first half of the scrapbook complete. The second half would be more difficult.
“Give that to me! You’re not putting that in there! It doesn’t even have my dad in it!”
I said, grabbing the picture out of her hand.
“Oh, but he would definitely get a good laugh out of THAT!” Tabitha added.
“Nice try. Not happening.” I placed the picture in the ‘to be filed’ box.
“Oh come on. You can’t just have all mushy pictures in there. You gotta have some funny ones, too!” Tabitha argued.
“Yes, but this is about my dad’s birthday, not about ME!” I said.
“Oh, here’s a good one.” Tabitha said.
She handed me a picture of all five of us dressed nicely, next to a floral garden.
“Oh yeah, I’d forgotten about that one.” I said, “That was taken at my cousin’s wedding five years ago.”
“Who took the shot?” Tabitha asked.
“Um, I think Shirley did, or a neighbor? I forget.” I answered.
I glanced up at the clock.
“Shit, is that the time already? I don’t want to show up at Alex’s house looking like I did this morning.”
“What’s the problem?” Tabitha said, “Since when do you care what you look like before going to work? And even better: since when are you on a first name basis with a patient?”
“Well, first of all, he’s not a patient he’s a client.” I said, “It’s pretty difficult to be calling each other ‘Mr.’ or ‘Miss’ when I’ve cleaned his soiled underpants in his own bathroom sink. Second of all, I don’t like looking like a slob when I go to see someone at their house: my mother raised me better than that, you know.”
Tabitha looked at me, puzzled.
“Geez, I was just kidding. What’s up with you?” Tabitha said.
She craned her neck back.
“What’s wrong? Are you not enjoying the job?” she asked.
“No, it’s not that. It’s just that I’ve only been with him for a week, and my boss says I’ve got maybe another week left with him.”
“I don’t get it. I thought that was the idea. You get them well and then move on to the next.” Tabitha said.
“Well, that is it. It’s just…..I don’t want to leave him. It’s too soon.” I explained.
“What, do you think he’s not ready to be on his own yet? You think he might be canceling the contract too quickly?”
“No, he’s doing really well. I mean, he’s laughing and eating, and doing everything on his own except walking now.” I said.
“Okay, love, you’ve lost me. I don’t follow what the problem is.” Tabitha said, scratching her head.
I sighed, “Tabitha, I’ve never felt more comfortable with a man before in my life. I feel like I can tell him anything, and I feel like he tells me anything.
